  • Balthasar Ress Hattenheim Engelmannsberg Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2012

Just starting to show the early stages of aging with petrol and sour apple notes on the nose, this very dry (trocken) Hattenheim Rheingau wine enters the mouth with a metallic tinge and some apricot flavours. The lack of any dob of sweetness on the finish may surprise some, but the wine is clean and refreshing if a little nervy. 90 points. Read More

  • Balthasar Ress Hattenheim Schuetzenhaus Rheingau Riesling 2012

This good Rheingau vintage (2012) shows nicely in this Kabinett wine from Hattenheim - one of the best Gebiete in the region (Bereich). The colour is copper-yellow with a nose of gooseberry jam and apple sauce. On entry, there is an overlay of icing sugar (dilute) with apple peel, kiwi and gooseberry on the palate. Some petrol notes are in evid... Read More

  • Balthasar Ress Riesling Rheingau 2011

This is a lower entry by Balthasar Ress but grapes are still likely sourced from Hattenheim or environs (just a guess). The nose is citrus (lime) with apple sauce and a hint of matchstick; on the palate the wine is juicy, with a hint of icing sugar, balanced by grapefruit-like juicy acidity. Very well made, with good pH balance. Excellent valu... Read More

  •  Each year when our parochial school has its magazine drive, we select 'Wine Enthusiast' to grace our mailbox.  Yesterday while I am bringing in the mail I see on the front cover "Summer Wine Issue."  Funny thing is, my mind read "issue" as "problem". One of those funny little shortcuts your mind takes.  You see, for me it is a problem. I am for... Read More

  • Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Schutzenhaus Riesling Kabinett 2010

There's not much to choose between the 2010 and 2011 save the greater freshness, verve and acidity (youth, mostly) of the latter. The 2010 is evolving with quince, gooseberry and petrol notes on the nose and mouth-watering citrus on the palate. Well balanced with grapefruit and green apple presence on the finish (which is quite long). Good va... Read More

  • Balthasar Hattenheimer Schuetzenhaus Riesling Kabinett 2011

This Hattenheim Rheingau producer has come up with a beauty... affordable, delicious, well-balanced and elegant with an enticing gooseberry, musk and lime nose and a refreshing, bright acidity countered by just the right amount of residual sugar on the palate. This is German Riesling at its best in both quality and price from a good vintage. You... Read More

  • There's an argument to be made for Riesling, and it's made on a regular ... Balthasar Ress Rheingau 12% $15Shy on the nose, with lightly stony notes over peach pit and wildflower aromas that have a slight green herb edge.  This starts out a bit tight, acid-driven and lean on entry, though it gains weight and power in the mouth. The texture real... Read More
