Castello Vicchiomaggio is a grand wine estate in the Greve Valley of Chianti in Tuscany, Italy. The estate has existed since the early 15th century, having served as a Florentine defense fortification during feuds with neighboring Siena in the middle ages, and with its fair share of distinguished guests over the centuries. Most famously, Leonardo da Vinci stayed at the castle while painting his masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. Besides offering luxury accommodations, Castello Vicchiomaggio produces a broad range of wines from traditional regional styles to modern IGTs. Villa Maggiore is their Super Tuscan range produced in the Maremma by the Matta family. They also produce grappa and olive oil.

  • San Jacopo da Vicchiomaggio Chianti Classico 2015

    Snoothrank:

This has a soft floral demeanor with pleasant red fruit aromatics and a mineral freshness to it. Refreshing acidity and cherry fruit lead the way on the palate with earthy structure, chocolate and plum skin on the finish. 89 pts Read More

  • Castello Vicchiomaggio la Prima Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2013

    Snoothrank:

Light earth and mushroom notes on the nose with savory balsamic vinegar fruit aromas of raspberry, strawberry and red currant. Perfectly balanced in the mouth with bright cherry and strawberry fruit, a hint of fresh herb and delicate flowers with refreshing acidity and silky tannins in total harmony. An impressive wine with age potential and exc... Read More

  • Many of us think of Chianti as an expensive, everyday wine but of course the truth of the matter is much more complex than that, and it just got even more complex. Adding complexity where it is not necessary seems to be something the Italians excel at, and with the introduction of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione they may have just done just that... Read More

  • Sangiovese is one of my favorite grapes. I probably consume more Sangiovese than any other variety, though usually in the guise of chianti or rosso di Montalcino. This group of wine represents the true value plays in Tuscan Sangiovese. often blended, in proportions that makes these similar to chianti, these wines take advantage of the enormous v... Read More

    Snoothrank:

75% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon Smoky with a hint of tomato on the nose followed by decidedly Cabernet and oak driven aromas of smoke, raw wood, dried herbs, plummy and black currant fruit. Bright, juicy and fairly black fruited onentry, this shows a nice initial wave of black raspberry fruit that is slightly jammy, then it drops off a bi... Read More
