Changyu Pioneer Wine Company is a corporate winery based out of Yantai, in the Shandong province of China. Unfortunately, their website comes with a distinct warning that proceeding could irreparably harm one’s computer, so I don’t advise checking it out. According to several articles on the company, their first vineyard was planted by Zhang Bishi in 1892. “The company now grows grapes on a total of 16,666 hectares of land in the Xinjiang Uygur and Ningxia Hui autonomous regions and Shandong, Shaanxi, Liaoning provinces, and Beijing. The land takes up a quarter of China's grape-planting areas.”

  • Changyu Cabernet Sauvignon Shandong China 2000

Cork is in excellent shape. For 18 years old wine it's very refreshing in general thanks to good acidity. I would say it's better than 2003. Medium body, with pretty much standard old wine set of sluggish strawberry, blueberry, tobacco leather and minerality...long strawberry aftertaste. Nice wine for a good price. Read More

  • Changyu Cabernet Sauvignon Shandong China 2003

14 years old wine for 10$ - awesome deal! Cork is in good shape. Beautiful golden-red color. Plums, mild wood and tobacco nose. Good acidity, medium texture plums and cranberries in flavor. Some sediment on bottom, as it should be. Read More
