First there was K Vintners, then the Magnificent Wine Company and now winemaker Charles Smith brings you his latest revelation. Charles Smith Wines: The Modernist Project is a response to how people generally consume wine today, that is immediately…as in immediately after being purchased at a market, restaurant or bar, to be drunk straight away. Wine in this category is typically ether simple, or is a wine that would be much better a few years down the road. ‘Modernist Project’ wines are about putting as much into the bottle as possible. The intent is to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with typicity with regards to variety—that is merlot that tastes like merlot—and to the vineyard—wine that tastes like where it was grown. The wines are full of flavor, balanced, and true to their place of origin. Owner-winemaker Charles Smith with his big hair, kick ass attitude and bold packaging arrived in the Walla Walla Valley following eleven years in Scandinavia managing rock bands. • Cs Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard Collection Substance Jack's Vineyard 2014

    Snoothrank:

Simple label - nearly identical with the regular CS Substance offering - but quite a notch up in quality, the Vineyard Collection (Jack's Vineyard) is a big winner: Almost black in the glass, with a truly wonderful blackberry, vanilla and cedar nose, this wine enters the mouth as smooth as the best cream, with nuances of cassis, red currant, and... • Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling 2015

    Snoothrank:

The CS Kung Fu Girl would, in fact, go very well with Chinese Fare (San Francisco style), as advertised; with spiced apple and vinaigrette on the nose. Entry is still quite acidic, clean and somewhat petrol-like (this is a 2015 after all). Bubbly acid on entry with a musky apple flavour profile. A very fine wine for the price. 89-90. Read More

  • Charles Smith has a couple of products available here; he was, I think a musician and a bit of weird dude (or hipster), but had a flair with wine and did not break the banks of the average middle class patron.  No, you cannot go wrong with CS, only, change may be on the horizon; the property was sold (and why not? - Smith made himself a fortune ... • So on a whim we decided to visit British Columbia. But we flew up to Washington, so visited a few places there too. Totally off the subject of wine, I found an awesome bakery in Spokane and the girl there served me this thing that I thought was a kind of Parmesan cheese foam. In fact it was fermented cashew whip, which was definitely weird, but ... Read More

  • Charles Smith Wines of Substance Substance Cs Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

    Snoothrank:

This modestly priced Cab has a nice cassis, blueberry and cherry nose - possibly with some gentle scent of pansies... if you can believe it. That's quite a lot of complexity at this price, and on entry, one gets a bit of almond bitterness and French Oak, plus a flood of cassis and blackberry fruit. This will age a few years. Oak will blow off... Read More

  • I am enjoying a veritable find of sorts.  My wife received a Charles Smith wine from a parent of one of her charges (who is a primary school teacher); the wine is Cs 2016 (Charles Smith Wines).  It costs around 14.95 US plus tax, perhaps, but a steal.  See my review on this site.  Some reviewers have waxed effusive and given 93 points.  I don't ... • Found a few bottles in a marketplace in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As a former resident of Mattawa, I was intriqued and purchased them. Found them to be earthy and interesting. Keep it up.

  • Purchases a few bottles of Cabernet at a Santa Fe market. Found the wine to be earthy and interesting. As a former resident of Mattawa, I am always interested in how the grape vineyards are progressing. Nicely done.
