Casillero del Diablo is a label produced by Concha y Toro Winery in Maipo Valley, Chile. Legend has it that in the early 1890s, winery founder Don Melchor went to his cellar to discover several of his best wines had gone missing. Hoping to ward off more thieves, he spread the rumor that this must have happened because a devil lived in his cellar, hence the name, which translates to “the devil’s cellar.” The first wines branded Casillero del Diablo were produced by Concha y Toro in 1953 and became an international success by the 1960s. The devil icon became a part of the packaging starting in the 1990s. The portfolio is now under the direction of winemaker Marcelo Papa. The wines are available in many styles and varietals of dry reds and whites, plus rosés and sparkling wines. Many of these considered terrific values for their pricepoints.
