Fattoria La Massa can be found hidden amongst the Chianti Classico hills of Panzano in the prestigious “Conca d’Oro,” (Golden Basin). It was acquired by its passionate owner, Giampaolo Motta, in 1992. Giampaolo, originally from Naples, came to the area in 1989 to follow his dream of making high quality wines. After working in some of the most famous Chianti Classico estates and spending time in Bordeaux, Giampaolo established La Massa with the technical consultation of famed enologist and friend Carlo Ferrini. Since the end 2008, he relies on the advice of renowned Stéphane Derenoncourt for the vineyards and cellar.

La Massa’s vineyards range in altitude from 315 to 460 meters (1,033 to 1,510 feet) above sea level, occupying an area of about 45 hectares (111 acres), of which 27 are planted with vines. • La Massa Toscana 2007

Let this decant for about 45 minutes while prepping dinner. Pours a bright purplish red color with dark pink hues around the edges. I gave a whiff upon opening and it was quiet, but after 45 minutes, the aromas are quite prevalent. Ample amounts of red cherries, raspberries, tobacco and garden herbs. Starts off with the cherry and raspberrie... Read More

  • La Massa Toscana IGT 2006

The nose showed cherries with undergrowth, earth and herbs. With time in the glass the bouquet blossomed with added layers of leather and Tuscan dust. On the palate it was balanced and velvety with ripe red berries and brisk acidity, which gave it excellent body contrasted by its mouth-watering qualities. A hint of structure still lingered on th... • La Massa Toscana IGT 2006

The nose was all dark fruits with tobacco, dried flowers, a tinge of spice and savory roasted meats. On the palate, the savory notes continued with a core of blackberry fruit, mineral salinity, beef broth and herbs with hint of tannin that lasts into the medium-long finish. This bottle will continue to evolve for a number of years to come. Read More

Dark, spicy, and juicy paired with my Kobe beef and short ribs. Paired well b/c the wine is still elegant and not too big and over powering. Read More

  • La Massa Rosso Toscana IGT 2009

Not near the quality of the 2006. Dry, woody, herbaceous. Fails to excite on the mid-Palate. Just not a ton of flavor intensity. Read More

I found restrained fruit on the nose, as sour berries and cinnamon gram come forward. On the palate, I found jammy cherry but little else and this wine lost momentum leading into the finish. Read More
