Gnarly Head Cellars

A passion for Zinfandel and a desire to make great Zin, led our winemaking team to Lodi, California's zinfamous appellation. But it was a sense of fun - wine should be fun, accessible, easy to understand and enjoy - that led us to create Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin. The sight of the free standing "head trained" vines found in older vineyards in California was the inspiration for Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin. These 35 to 80 year old vines have twisted old trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like unruly umbrellas - truly gnarly heads. The grapes these old vines produce are small and few, but offer big flavor! But Zinfandel is not the only California grape that can be Gnarly. Our winemaking team selects grapes from some of the best vineyards in Northern California for our Gnarly Head Chardonnay, Merlot and Cab (Cabernet Sauvignon). Gnarly Head wines are easy to drink and pair with food, and made to bring people together, to enjoy with laughter, to celebrate past Read more »

  • Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi 2016

    Snoothrank:

This one pours a rusty purple hued tone, with cranberry and blueberry tinges around the outside ring. Also has an oily film that is left on the inside of the wine glass. Aromas that are superbly fruit forward, with jammy sweet berries, vanilla, peppercorn heat, hints of caramel and notes of sweet oak aging. Flavors follow suit, with more swee... Read More

  • Gnarly Head Old Vine Lodi Zinfandel 2014

    Snoothrank:

The Gnarly Head (Lodi, CA) Zinfandel is typical of its Central Valley provenance; there is a soft vanilla-cherry nose with a hint of evergreen (cedar or cypress), and entry is slightly sweetish with a ton of blueberry or bilberry on the palate, a short finish but decent balance with little heat (despite the 15% alcohol by volume.) and touch of c... • Gnarly Head "Limited Release" Authentic Dark 2013

    Snoothrank:

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. This may have the largest chocolate profile in a wine that is not an actual "Chocolate" wine that I've ever tasted. Oh, yeah there is also blackberry, moderate tannins and enough acidity to give a lingering aftertaste. Decent, decant for 30 minutes. Drink now - Paul 86 points Read More

  • Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi 2013

    Snoothrank:

This is a fabulous very full-bodied rich red! The blackberry and cassis fruit tasting notes are succulent! We paired it with olives, sharp cheddar on multigrain bagette dipped in peppery/herbed olive oil with garlic stuffed olives. I think it would be excellent with any spicy cuisine, which makes the spicy backnote of this wine explode on your ... Read More

  • Great value. I am always asked what the wine is when we serve it. It is easy to drink and pleasant to the nose. I am always surprised how much I enjoy the Gnarly Head Zinfadel Old Vine wine largely due to its price.
