Combining the art of old world wine-making with new world innovation to create Merlots that can be considered among the world’s best, from one of the world’s most acclaimed Merlot producing regions: Washington State. Washington State is America’s second largest wine-producing region, with over 31,000 vine acres and 600 wineries, 90% of them east of the Cascade Mountain range in the Columbia Valley of Eastern Washington, a high-plains region in which the Snake, Yakima and Columbia rivers converge. The Columbia Valley encompasses eight American Viticultural Areas: Walla Walla Valley, Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills, Wahluke Slope, Puget Sound and the Columbia Gorge. In this semi-arid climate, vines are planted on south-facing slopes to enhance sun exposure in the summer and air drainage in winter. • Northstar Columbia Valley Merlot 2012

Had this at lunch at Marcello's Chophouse the other day. Interesting - I asked the waitperson to pick something to go with the Lobster Bisque - it is dark and inky and opens like a herb/slate forward Pinot. There was a lightness there, that led me to believe it was the Pinot...Being as suggestable as I am, when I asked what the wine was, a Merlo... Read More

  • Northstar Merlot Columbia Valley 2011

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, with a center that borders on indigo. The nose is an interesting combination of mocha, dark chocolate and raspberry over a subtle base of earthy minerality. The taste is very nice, a blast of fruit up front, tart cherry, raspberry that transition seamlessly into some vanilla bean and toasted oak midp... Read More

  • Northstar Winery Northstar Merlot 2009

Another winner from Northstar! The 2008 was good but a bit light on the structure and substance. This is a bigger more complex wine with a good back bone and very nice balance, Northstar does Washington Merlot right....again and again! Cheers! Read More

The wine is a nice deep ruby color in the glass. The nose is is a nice combination of leather, cedar and rich black fruit, plum, black cherry and prune with a bit of anise over the top. The taste is very nice, with some dried herbs, mint and a hint of floral notes up front that transitions wonderfully to some rich ripe fruit midpalate, with an... Read More

  • Northstar Merlot Columbia Valley 2006

Nice. Thicker and more complex than I remember with the 2006. Blackberry and herbal notes come across. A good nose on Berrys and vanilla. Give it an hour to open. Another good Washington Merlot from Northstar. Read More
