The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone (third person on bench wearing tall boots), a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. At 2600', it is surrounded by the "upper vineyard." In the 1940s, William Short, a theologian, bought the abandoned winery and vineyard just below the Perrone property; he replanted several parcels to cabernet sauvignon in the late 1940s. From these vines — now the "middle vineyard"— new owners Dave Bennion and his three partners, all Stanford Research Institute engineers, made a quarter-barrel of "estate" cabernet. Ridge Vineyards on Snooth

  • Ridge Geyserville 2013

    Snoothrank:

Three years after my previous notes on this wine, I'm still liking it. As noted before, a light hit of red fruit--raspberry--but with no sweetness. Acid is apparent. As previously reported, tannin is somewhat sedate. I'm still calling this a medium-bodied wine, but contrary to my previous assessment, I am of the impression that more years of ... Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

I'm going to be a bit kinder to this wine than I was a year and a half ago. I am still getting bright red fruit--raspberry, plum, and I am still surprised at the relative lack of tannin. However, it has rounded out to a nice, mouth-filling wine. I am wondering if this is a stylistic change at the winery. Read More

  • Ridge Vineyards Pagani Ranch Zinfandel 2016

    Snoothrank:

Good wine, but definitely needs more time. Fruit of red cherry. Some dustiness. Quite stiff tannin. Nice tart acid. Retro-nasal menthol sensation. Give this one three more, or so, years to let the tannin and acid resolve. Then, I am pretty sure, this wine will develop to become outstanding. Read More

  • Wine is people. I’m not talking about the people with whom you enjoy wine. Here I refer to the people behind the wine – those folks we ought to celebrate as the literal fruits of their labor coat our palates. • Ridge 'Lytton Springs' 2011

    Snoothrank:

A very elegant Zinfandel. Does that sound strange, or what? Quite often, Zinfandel (and this bottling is 84% Zinfandel) seems to hit with tons of berries, sticks, thorns, tea leaves and other things off the floor. This one enters with no fanfare. Light red fruitnot the big berry thing that I get, a lot, with Zinfandel and, definitely, not ja... Read More

  • Hasn’t it? When we started Snooth back in 2007, rosé was not such a hot button topic. Its growth over the past eleven years is astounding. The funny thing is, we can assume that prior to direct pressing most all... Read More
